FM declassifies ‘tens of thousands of historical documents’

TEHRAN, May 18 (MNA) – President’s legal deputy has said a Foreign Ministry regulating body has declassified 44,000 historical documents which cover years of War with Iraq.

New decision by Supreme Council of Supervising the Formulation and Publication of Foreign Ministry Papers, a body regulating classifying and declassifying of historical papers, allowed public access to these documents covering up to 1941(corresponding to sending of Reza Khan to exile) and another group of documents covering years of 1980 War with Iraq, which would be of special interest for researchers and academics of history.

The session where Ms. Elham Aminzadeh, Vice-President for Legal Affairs, Reza Salehi Amiri, presidential aide and Head of Iran’s National Library, Hassan Ghashghavi, Deputy-FM for Consular and Parliamentary Affairs, Hadi Soleimanpour, Head of Center for International Education and Research, and Hossein Jaberi Ansari, FM Spokesperson and Head of Media and Public Relations Office attended, approved the gradual declassification of Foreign Ministry documents covering up to September 1976 and facilitation of services for the interested public coming for information from FM Documents Office.

A single act of March 3, 1984 and cabinet decision dated July 1986 requires Foreign Ministry to give public access to its classified documents of 30-40 years of age on a gradual basis for use by the academics and researchers. FM Document Office has a record of 50 million documents in different foreign policy strands.
